Algorithms Don’t Decide Your Worth. You Do.

June 19, 2025 · In: Blog, Lifestyle, Mental Wellness, Self Care, Wellness

Did you hear? Algorithms are slowly outnumbering people on Earth. Okay, that’s dramatic — but not far off when you consider how much influence they hold over our daily lives.

From social media visibility to resume scans, algorithms have crept into places where our worth once lived freely. It’s no wonder many of us unconsciously tie our value to numbers on a screen.

But in this tangled world of charging cords and curated content, one truth remains constant: algorithms don’t decide your worth — you do.

If you’ve been struggling to fall back in love with yourself or to reclaim your power in a digital world that thrives on perfection and performance, keep reading.

Understanding Self-Worth in a Metric-Driven Culture

Self-worth is your internal sense of value, separate from external achievement. It’s not about how you perform or how others see you — it’s about how you see yourself.

In a 2019 study by the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that reducing time spent on social media significantly decreased feelings of loneliness and depression in young adults. Why? Because social platforms often hijack our self-worth by comparing our behind-the-scenes with someone else’s highlight reel.

To protect your well-being in a hyperconnected world, you have to actively choose what defines your value.

Practices to Rebuild Internal Worth:

  • Identify your core values: What truly matters to you? Security? Growth? Creativity? Start there.
  • Track intrinsic wins: Instead of logging likes, journal moments of courage, kindness, or creativity.
  • Differentiate voice from noise: Learn to recognize your intuition versus the pressure of external expectations.

How Algorithms Shape Our Perception

Algorithms aren’t evil. They’re systems designed to show us more of what we engage with. But over time, they begin to mold our perception of what’s important, popular, or worthy.

Social media companies use complex behavioral data to keep you scrolling. According to research published in Nature Human Behaviour, the average person touches their phone over 2,600 times per day, often unconsciously. This habitual checking stimulates the release of dopamine, a “feel-good” chemical, reinforcing the behavior even when it’s not aligned with our values.

The Cost of Algorithmic Validation:

  • Eroded attention span
  • Increased comparison and anxiety
  • Reduced sense of authenticity

To counteract this, we need to retrain our brains to seek meaning and fulfillment offline.

The Shared Struggle of Showing Up Authentically

If you’ve ever felt torn between being yourself and “posting what works,” you’re not alone. Many creators and everyday users feel pressured to produce content that aligns with algorithmic trends rather than their values.

When TikTok first launched, it felt like a breath of fresh air — people sharing honestly, regardless of expertise or polish. But like other platforms, monetization and market saturation have shifted the tone. Authenticity now competes with virality and aesthetics.

To Show Up Authentically:

  • Batch create content when you’re in flow, not when you’re chasing relevance (this is the only way I create content these days!)
  • Unfollow accounts that trigger comparison and replace them with accounts that inspire real growth (this one changed my social feeds permanently for the better)
  • Use mute or “close friends” filters to post more honestly without pressure (this hack is immensely freeing and functions as an energetic boundary)

You can still enjoy and engage with social platforms. The goal isn’t to unplug entirely; it’s to engage with intention.

Rewiring Your Self-Talk: The Foundation of Self-Worth

What you say to yourself shapes how you see yourself. And unfortunately, most of us internalize the voices of criticism more than compassion (speaking from experience here).

Neuroscience shows that repetitive negative self-talk strengthens neural pathways that increase stress, while practices like daily affirmations or gratitude journaling can rewire those pathways to build resilience and calm.

Tools to Reprogram Your Self-Talk:

  • Cognitive reframing: Notice a limiting belief (e.g., “I’m not good enough”) and replace it with a truth (“I’m learning and improving every day”).
  • Mirror work: Speak kind, affirming words to yourself in the mirror — yes, it feels awkward at first, but it works. My favorite way to start the day included me looking at myself in the eyes in the mirror and saying, “Grand rising, beautiful, I love you.” It took almost 7 months before I started truly believing it. Now? It’s an unquestionable fact.
  • Compassionate journaling: Write to yourself like you would a best friend. Forgive. Celebrate. Encourage. You’ll be surprised how much easier it is to let heavy memories, emotions, or experiences go when you write them down on paper. The most impactful and transformative forgiveness comes from yourself.

These practices might sound small, but they hold the power to shift the way you show up in every area of your life.

A Digital Environment That Supports, Not Sabotages

Your phone is designed to grab your attention, not guard your mental health. But that doesn’t mean you can’t outsmart it.

Practices to Reclaim Your Power:

  • Replace social scrolling with Pinterest: A more passive, inspiration-first platform, Pinterest can help retrain your subconscious. Try creating a “Dream Life” board with images that support your highest vision.
  • Add a Pinterest widget to your home screen: That “Dream Life” board is the perfect way to turn your home screen into a powerful reminder. Let your goals be something you see multiple times a day, every day, to ensure they stay top of mind.
  • Disable badge notifications: Create a calm first screen on your phone by enabling notifications only for essential apps such as messages, email, and phone calls. You might also consider adding a workout app reminder or a health reminder to encourage engagement with activities that align with your goals. This helps break the habit of opening apps merely to dismiss the red notifications.
  • Use bookmarks instead of apps: I began replacing my app covers with bookmarks three to four years ago. It has positively impacted my ability to break automatic habits related to clearing notifications, getting sucked into social media apps, and instantly feeling overwhelmed with to-dos the moment I open my phone. This encourages more intentional engagement and puts me back in the driver’s seat! Instead of everything competing for my attention, I can focus on the apps I want to engage with.

These small adjustments create distance between you and the urgency of digital feedback, giving your nervous system a break and your mind a clearer space to reflect.

Redefining What Success and Happiness Look Like

Real fulfillment doesn’t come from curated aesthetics or metrics. It comes from alignment with your values.

Your life might look quiet from the outside, but if it feels rich with purpose, peace, and authenticity, you’re doing it right.

Maybe your dream is a cabin in the woods. Maybe it’s a tiny city apartment. Maybe it’s building a business or raising a family or writing a book. None of those dreams are more worthy than the others. What matters is that they are yours.

Questions to Reconnect With Yourself:

  • What brings me peace even when no one else sees it?
  • If I wasn’t performing for anyone, what would I still love to do?
  • What would my life look like if it were designed around my values?

These are the metrics that matter.

The Final Word: Worth Comes From Within

You are not the number of followers you have. You are not the engagement rate of your last post. You are not the algorithm’s favorite flavor of the week.

You are a whole, dynamic, deeply valuable human being.

And the second you stop waiting for the algorithm to validate your existence is the second you reclaim your freedom.

Start with your thoughts. Rewire the narrative. Create a digital life that reflects the real one you want to build.

You get to decide what success looks like. You get to choose what worthy feels like.

The algorithm doesn’t decide. You do.
